With the cost of oil on the rise, so goes the cost of trash liners.

We are all painfully aware that petroleum based products have increased in cost. More than likely, we will continue to see more increases in the near and long term future. However, in every negative there can be a chance to look for something positive. This is a great opportunity to encourage good habits in your workplace that could translate into substantial cost savings.

Consider this one example:

As a cleaning service, our job is to remove and replace all trash liners that have food, liquid or other unsanitary substances in them. Consider the number of waste baskets in your facility, at every desk, every restroom, every kitchen, every coffee station, etc., that have petroleum based trash liners.

Why not enforce a strict policy of no food or drink in individual wastebaskets? Simply require your staff to take all food and drink leftovers and trash/recyclables to the kitchen or specially designated area for controlled disposal.

Such a policy has several benefits:

• Cleaners do not have to change liners nearly as often.

• Cleaners can do their job more efficiently.

• No food or drink in wastebaskets throughout the facility reduces the risk of food and drink getting on the carpet through holes in liners.

• Sanitation levels are raised throughout the building by not having food and drink sitting in trash receptacles creating foul odors for you to live with until the next time the trash is removed – especially for areas that are not cleaned nightly.

Of course, you have to decide what is most appropriate for your staff and working conditions, but implementing policies of this nature will both reduce costs and create a cleaner environment throughout your facility.
